MILAN 3-1 FIORENTINA
25/03/2006
Milan tuned-up nicely for the midweek Champions League quarter-final first leg at Lyon, with a quality display to dispose of Fiorentina.
Carlo Ancelotti made two changes from the side that defeated Udinese, with Rino Gattuso returning from suspension and Filippo Inzaghi replacing Alberto Gilardino in attack. Milan were almost caught cold on thirty seconds when Luca Toni was left free on the edge of the area, but the league's top scorer got under his first-time shot and the ball flew high and wide. Inzaghi then came close at the other end, getting on the end of Andrea Pirlo's corner to flick a volley from a tight angle just over the frame of the goal. The visitors went ahead on 13 minutes when Toni fired home from close range after Tomas Ujfalusi had climbed in the area to head the ball back across the face of the goal. However, a wounded Milan is a dangerous animal and they were back on level terms within seven minutes when Pirlo latched on to a loose ball to play in Shevchenko on the left side of the area and the striker neatly cut inside a defender to sweep away a low drive. Reinvigorated by the goal, there then followed long periods of Rossoneri dominance as the ball was moved around swiftly in midfield although Fiorentina seemed more than willing to concede space in the middle third of the pitch. Chances were at a premium for the remainer of the period although Kakà came close with a spectacular scissor-kick volley which goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont did well to get a hand on low to his right-hand post.
The resumption saw Milan pick up where they had left off and within two minutes they were ahead. Alessandro Costacurta escaped down the right flank to deliver a pinpoint cross for Kakà to dispatch a firm header into the corner of the net. There was a real swagger about the home side as they probed down both flanks and the Viola defence were forced to work overtime to contain the red and black tide. The pedigree running through the team was highlighed on the hour-mark when Gattuso hit a thunderous shot from 25 metres that the diving Lobont could only parry into the net. When they are on top of the game Milan are irresistible, but with Lyon just four days away it was a matter of remaining in cruise control and the biggest cheer of the evening came on 75 minutes when Paolo Maldini returned to first-team action as a replacement for Costacurta who pulled up sharply with what looked like a hamstring injury. Goal-hero Shevchenko then left the fray for Manuel Rui Costa to come on against his former side and Clarence Seedorf should have extended the lead but put a sliding close-range effort over the bar after Kakà had delivered a low cross from the left.
